Introduction to Bird Management

Birds can cause more than just a nuisance — they bring health risks (guano, disease), damage property (nesting, droppings, corrosion), create safety & hygiene issues, and often legal liability if wildlife regulations or protected species are involved. This course will show you how to assess, manage, and mitigate bird problems effectively and in compliance with UK laws. You’ll go from knowing that problem exists to being able to design solutions that work.

Who Should Attend

This course is perfect for those new to bird control (pest technicians, facility staff, property managers, environmental officers) or anyone who needs a foundational understanding of bird behaviour, proofing, deterrents, and legal obligations. No high-level prior qualification required — but having some exposure to pest control or a Level 2 pest management course will help you get the most from it.

Course Content

  • Bird Biology & Behaviour: species common in built environments, nesting & roosting habits, seasonal behaviour, how behaviour influences control approaches.

  • Legislation, Licensing & Protection: UK wildlife law, protected species, how to ensure you’re compliant, getting permits / licences as necessary.

  • Deterrents & Proofing Methods: spikes, netting, electric deterrents, visual & audio deterrents, exclusion methods; pros/cons; cost & maintenance.

  • Risks & Non-Target Animals: how to protect non-target species, environmental risks, welfare.

  • Surveying, Inspection & Monitoring: how to inspect sites, record evidence, monitor activity, carry out surveys to inform treatment.

  • Planning & Client Communication: writing reports / proposals, estimating costs, advising clients, setting expectations.
